Who doesn’t have a very sophisticated gadget called
smartphone right now? Well, you can observe people around you or when you are
out there at the mall or campus, most people that you see hold a rectangle and
look at it most of the time. Are you one of them? Honestly, I can say that I’m
one of them. Since 2013, I’ve become a smartphone user and it turns out that I’m
addicted to it. Do I like smartphone? Of course, I do. It’s the coolest gadget
I’ve ever had. I can do everything with it. Do I like the fact that I’m
addicted to it? NO! I hate the fact that I can’t live without it.

As a smartphone user, my life can’t be apart from social medias and messenger. I have like more than 3 but less than 9 social medias and messengers. Most of them are active because I need them for working and keeping in touch with my friends and my students. I also use it to spend my free time by browsing pictures on my instagram. And I do it more often than chatting. I’m not a gamer so I don’t play games with it. I know that right now people are addicted to Pokemon Go and I love to watch the anime so much, but I don’t want to play it. Well, social medias and messengers already influence my life a lot. Now, I don’t want to hurt my eyes and burn my brain by looking at my phone that often. I really want to get away with it. And I’m still working on it.
Why do I hate the fact that I can’t live without it? The real
reason is because I often miss everything that happens around me when I focus
on my smartphone. When people talk to me, I focus on my gadget then I miss what
they say. It’s like I ignore and offend them. I try to put myself on their
shoes, it’s not nice to feel ignored and offended. It’s the worst feeling! When I walk and look at my phone, I miss
interesting sceneries and events that happen around me. So many things are
missed. That’s why, I’m trying my very best to use it less often.
Is it possible to use it less often? Absolutely, it is! I did
it before when I spent my whole holiday at my hometown. I didn’t have any
internet connection when I was there. At first, it was really hard for me to
survive for few days without looking at my feed. But then, I tried to find
interesting activities to kill the time such as reading books, playing piano
(well, I’m not good at it at all), listening to music, bicycling around the
city, talking with my parents a lot, playing with my cats, writing something,
hanging out with my bestfriend, and so many things. I feel like I have become
more alive back then. Living without smartphone is truly nice. I can get closer
to the people around me and the mother nature. I miss that time already. And I
want to create those moments again.
I know that It’s impossible to dispose my smartphone and
become non smartphone user. Yeah, it’s because I need it for my work. I also
realize that It’s not that easy to use it less often. But it doesn’t mean I
can’t do that. I’ve ever done it before so I think I’m capable of doing it
again this time. I mean to use it less often seriously. I’ve had enough brain
contamination which comes from my smartphone.
I’ve tried some attempts to limit my access to my smartphone.
The first is I only open my smartphone when I’m alone. When I’m with my
friends, students, and co-workers, I try not to open it. I focus talking to
them. When they are the ones who ignore me because of their smartphones, I just
focus at my surroundings and find interesting things from them. Lucky me, most
of my friends never ignore me. They focus on me when I talk to them. I never
insult my friends who focus on their gadget because I’m afraid of getting
yelled and I offend them. Haha such a coward I am. The second is I only open my
smartphone when I need it for my work or contacting my friends. If I have free
time, I try to distract myself from looking at my phone by doing other hobbies
like reading novels, playing flute, and writing posts for my blog. Yeah, I try
to do these routines every day so I won’t get in touch with my celly most of
the time.
Do they work well to reach my target that is using my celly
less often? Umm, it’s still on progress so I can’t assure you that they work
well. I hope they do. And I hope I’ll become less addicted to it. I’m pretty
sure it’s not going to be that easy. But, I’m sure I can do it. Amin... Do you
have the same condition with me? Well, I hope it inspires you. And if you have
some tips for me, please share them here. It will be very helpful. :)
