Malang, 22 November 2011
I lived in Bali Island since I was born. Actually, I lived in Negara city, Jembrana district, Bali. I lived there with my big family. Negara city belongs to my hometown. I spent so many years there. But, in 2010, I left Negara and went to Malang, East Java. I went to Malang for my study at Brawijaya University. Since, July 2010, Malang has been being my second hometown. It was really hard to struggle in Malang at my first time. I found out that my two hometowns have less similarity than differences.
The similarity of Negara and Malang is the open areas. Similar to Negara, Malang has many open areas that providing for people. Both in Negara and Malang, people use the open areas for doing some activities such as jogging, cycling, taking photos, spending spare time and other activities, The similarity of open areas appears on the plants and trees. There are so many kinds of trees and plants which grow up at the open areas in Negara and Malang.
Despite the similarity, there are more differences of both. First difference is the house. In Negara-Bali, most of the houses use Bali architecture. Most of the houses have a main gate that is called as “Angkul-Angkul” or “Gapura”, a little temple that is called “Padmasana” or “Merajan” and Balinese relief that could be seen at the houses. In contrast, most of the houses in Malang use conventional and simple architecture. Most of the houses have small garden and small garage. Other difference is the roads. Negara city has quiet roads. There are a few vehicles that fill the roads. Traffic jam also never happens in Negara. The traffic in Negara is very smooth and safe. On the other hand, Malang city has crowded roads. There are so many roads that is filled with so many vehicles such as motorcycle, cars, buses and trucks. Malang also often has traffic jam because of the crowded roads. Third difference is the people. Most of the people in Negara are Hinduism. So, wherever I go, I will always find some citizens that have Hinduism spiritual activity. It is very different with people in Malang. In this city, I find that most of the people are Moslem. Wherever I go, I always find some women that are wearing veil and go to the mosque for doing spiritual activity.
Based on my observation, Negara and Malang have lack similarities than differences. Even though, both of them are very different each other, they are still my hometowns. I always think that Negara and Malang are places that are comfortable for me to live.
